Governance

SARCA was formally established in 2018 as a BSR (Business for Social Responsibility) Collaborative Initiative. It is independently facilitated and governed by BSR as Secretariat, a SARCA Operating Charter, and a representative, multi-stakeholder Steering Committee.

SARCA is organized via a membership model, consisting of industry and non-industry stakeholders. SARCA’s membership includes conservation science and regulatory bodies including the IUCN SSC Snake Specialist Group, CITES Management Authority of Switzerland, representation of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, and Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

SARCA currently has over 20 members participating in the trade in reptile skins from Southeast Asia, including representation from luxury brands and buyers, tanneries in Europe, USA, and Asia, and processing facilities and farms from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
